Variable Service Interval

Variable Service Interval
I've had some doubts whether my TT is set to Variable or Fixed Interval servicing. I've done about 500 miles in it and a couple of days ago it was reading service due in 9500 miles - so I assumed that it was set to fixed.
I've just gone out to my car to check it again before I phone up my (very unhelpful) dealer that I bought it from... and it's now reading 3800 miles!
Well I guess it's now clear that it is variable interval servicing... but a service after 4000 miles (according to the current reading) this must be wrong.
I've just contacted another dealer in my area and they are going to have a look at it on the way home tonight. Anyone else had this sort of issue???

oh - and no - I don't drive about in 1st gear all the time!
