Default Best "All season, All weather" tire that has snow rating for TT 3.2 Quattro

I wanted Nokian WR all season tires for my 2008 TT 3.2 Quattro Roadster but Nokian doesn't make a tire equivalent to the stock 245/40/18 All season run flats.

I asked my local installer if he would put the Nokian 235/40/18 tires on but he declined since he felt that the tires are not close enough in circumference giving different revs/mile and may screw up the gearing on the s-tronic. Audi was noncommittal on this as well and said it would "probably be ok" but wouldn't put it in writing and I do not want to void the warrantee.

Now I don't know what to do. I really had my heart set on those Nokians since I don't want to change to snow tires every season and I hate the hard ride on the run flat tires. Nokian does make a "true" snow tire in the 245/40/18 size but I couldn't leave them on in the summer. Is there any alternative to the WR???

I was told this car is best not driven in the snow with the stock all season tires and the Nokians are really the only true all season snow rated tires that can be driven on all year round with excellent wear and traction.

Are there any other tires with a snow rating that would be adequate in the snow and still not need to be removed with good wear (at least 25 K miles?)

Default How much snow are you talking about?

The best all-season tires still aren't recommended for serious snow (more than a couple of inches). The Nokian WRs may be the exception, as they have a really aggressive tread pattern. Are you sure the diameter would be that different (somewhere on the Tire Rack site is a calculator that would help you determine the exact dimensions)?

Many TTers simply bite the bullet and purchase a separate set of wheels and snow tires. Then you can decrease the wheel diameter and increase the aspect ratio for a slightly narrower tire (more weight/power on a smaller contact patch = better traction).

Default According the the tirerack surveys, Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS. Based on personal experience

I live in the North East (New York) and the Ultra High Performance All-Seasons that I've tried are the Toyo Proxes 4, Pirelli PZero Nero M&S, and now the Continental ContiExtremeContact. According to the survey, my Continentals should be really good for the money, but I have yet to try them in snow. My Toyos proved to be just adequate in light snow, but I had to take things easy if I wanted to be safe. I loved the Pirelli's in the snow, they were absolutely great, BUT at that time I lived farther south (Maryland) and there were a lot less hills for me to tackle, so that may be swaying my opinion.

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/surveyresults/index.jsp

3-5 inches. I wouldn't drive in more and the main roads are usually cleared early in the AM. It is the side streets that may have several inches. I have driven a front wheel drive corolla in 6 inch snow storms and managed to get home ok, although the going was slow. With the quatro and the Potenza RE960s I should be able to get home ok. My commute is only 22 miles.
