In the US, all stock Mk 2 TT, TTS, TTRS use ABS hub rotation sensors to generate TPMS alerts. It specifically states this in each model's owner's manual. They do not monitor tire pressure directly, so there is not a part on the rim sending signals somewhere. Note that after the TPMS has been reset via the dash display after inflating the tires to proper pressure, you will get a TPMS warning if the pressure later is too low (ABS measures an increase in rotation rate) OR too high (ABS measures a decrease in rotation rate). Why the Audi engineers could not have added one line of computer code to ignore over-inflation warnings which are merely a nuisance amazes me.
If you have not checked your tire pressure recently, pressure increases as outside temperature increases. Your intermittent warning may be due to the tire pressure being borderline too high. For example it might be OK in the cool morning but go off in the hot afternoon or extended highway driving.
Several sources offer aftermarket direct measurement systems.
