Default Ghost Codes?

I am new to VAG-Com so please excuse my ignorance. Using the Vag-com I run the scan (engine off) and I see engine fault codes. I clear fault codes and rescan. Some scans return the same codes (some or all). Sometimes the rescan returns no faults. But if i run the scan again a fault code will return. The fualts returned are always a subset of the original codes (never a new fault). I don't understand why this is happening given that the motor is not running and therefore how can the codes be produced? I would appreciate any help here.

BTW: I am using Release 303-1

Can you copy and paste an example of what you are seeing?

Default here is the output

The following is a summary of the output. My user activities are denoted by "--->" I re-assembled this from several daily files. I can go make a more thurough copy of a standardized test. I think there is some variation between the full scan and the individual scan. It seems as is doing one and then the other will cause these ghosts to appear, or maybe my car is hosed.

I have not diven the car between scans that happend on the same day. I tested on the 5th, 8th, and 10th. I drove the car between the days. I conducted multiple tests on the same day without driving or even running the motor. The codes would 'reappear' in one testig session.

FYI, I have had some 'flakey' connection issues which could be related to the ability to clear. I have reviewed the FAQ and will take the necessary actions. However, I do not think I can teminate my Office Scan application (corp computer).

Duno, I borrowed the cable interface from my friend Tom Leppke-Hennig. I will go look when I get in the car this afternoon. I will also run the following test with the engine off:

1. Scan the engine module
2. Review codes
3. perform auto scan
4. compare codes
5. clear codes in the autoscan module window
6. Repeat steps 1-5 and look for variation

Default interface types and better results

Andy:

I checked the interface I am using. It is a registered Ross-Tech DIN interface Rev-B is on the label.

Last night I did some limited testing with my laptop. I followed the FAQ on "flaky" connections (Disabled Virus and Xircom cards). I found that I had much better connections to the ECU. I noticed that the "\" icon is supposed to keep turning, before it was turning intermittently. I believe this may have been causing inconsistent results. In fact I received a whole bunch more faults than I had seen before. Also, I more clearly understand what "Clear Results" means on the Auto scan function. I thought it meant clear the faults, not true.

I want to do some more testing to see if I can replicate the 'Ghost Codes'. So far the results have been very consistent. The auto scan and the individual scans match. I cleared all fault codes for all modules. I have driven the car now and I will review the faults that return, clear them and rescan to see if any ghosts popup.

I did receive a connectivity error on the auto scan. After being connected for about 10 min, the auto scan kept erroring out after scanning the first module (engine). I figured I would disconnect and try later.
