Default minimum needed

Hi, I too - as others below - need a low cost solution. Just blew my and my neighbors wad (no jokes please LOL) to get the car and even the lint in my pockets is gone.

I bought a 2006 S4 and want to do a bunch of software changes. In my immediate future I want to kill the belt chime, turn on auto lock and turn on window/sunroof roll up from remote. There may be a couple of other tweeks - I need to research more, but those are key for me right now as they are bugging me.

That having been said, what is the minimum that I need to do this? Can a generic USB cable setup from ebay with the freeware version of VAGCOM work to do this? Do i need the new fangled two channel (for lack of experience and words) version?

$350 for that setup is a bit steep for me right now especially since I just want to do these user/environmental mods, rather than engine or other performance tweeking/recording.

Best,
Peet

Default Your 2006 S4 uses CAN-Bus diagnostics

Cheapie ebay cables won't work. Our KEY Interfaces won't work. You'll need the HEX-COM+CAN (if you have a 9-male-pin Serial Port) or the HEX-USB+CAN (if you only have a USB port). Those two, at $329 and $349 ARE your least expensive options. Your only other options are the VAS-5051 and VAS-5052, which run about $10,000 and $7,000.

Now then key interfaces won't work at all, or for all things?

Again, all I am looking to recode are door locks, seatbelt chimes, window rollup - trivial things.

No interest in engines, abs etc.

Cheap interfaces aside - even your own key interface is more reasonable than the $350 tool that (probably) makes sense to shop owners and serious tuners.

thanks for the quick response, I look forward to some more detail on this.

P

P.S. I'd find someone locally to help me using that .pl tool - but I honestly don't have much faith in strangers' abilities with computers (I am an IT head).

Default Look at the B7 chart to see which module uses which protocol.

So the answer is still, to have access to all stuff a HEX+CAN interface is mandatory.

http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/cars/applications/a4s4.html</a

Default Yes you can change the convenience settings with a cheap one...

you can do the seatbelt, windows, recode the lights to euro spec, etc. You get almost NO engine functions though, so you cannot monitor the performance of car or even read codes very well. If you are going to chip the car, the registered one is mandatory since monitoring a chipped car is pretty important, but if you just want to mod some convenience features on a stock car, sure the cheapie ones will work. cheers! Thanks Mike. I had a feeling that was the case.
