RANT: IT REALLY SHOULDN'T BE THIS DIFFICULT!!!!!
Sorry for the rant but, crikey. So I've had the A4 Bentley manual and used for reference in the past on a desktop computer. Then I decided it was time for Vag as well as a Bentley for my VW 1999 NB. So I scared up a laptop, but the NB Bentley needs Win98 and the laptop had Win95.
OK I scare up a copy of Win98 and do an install from a newley formatted C:\ drive.
Then Bentley (cuz the A4 manual now isn't working) tells me I need a new disk. It came yesterday. I try installing and it's asking for a registration serial number. A 4x3x4 digit number "on the back of the booklet". The only number there is 4x4x4x4.
Installation leaves the desktop with only ONE e-Bahn icon. It seems to try to fire up the A4 manual!
WHAT A PAIN IN THE A$$. I'm ready to ask for all my money back (did I mention VAG hangs so far when I've tried it?) and just find a new mechanic.

So last night I tried again on my A4. WHEW...got everything to work.
I read codes, and rooted around the different modules while reading through the manual. The hang issue is pretty random and happens a lot when I'm online with IE. Plus I was connecting to the VW at that point. So I don't know that it's related to the VAG. But I GOT IT TO WORK! So I'm not quite as frustrated as I was. Thanks for the concern. I'm pretty sure I'll be back!

The VAG protocols must in in real-time.
If the PC you're using originally had W95 on it, you might be asking it to run VAG-COM reliably at the same time as your using the Bentley and being online with IE might simply be asking too much from that hardware.
