wierd connection problem...i can connect fine to some modules but not others.

wierd connection problem...i can connect fine to some modules but not others.
2000 A4 1.8t, factory radio.
in the past with my setup ive been able to connect with all control modules, for the last year or so ive been really only connecting with the ECU. Logging, clearing codes all is ok.
the communications "options" are set to default.
version 3.11 with an oldschool dumb adapter.
just last night i tried to connect with other modules.
engine: ok
radio: ok
a/c: intermittant with garbled text
instuments: no, vag-com reports "unknown" protocol
abs: no
obviously the interface works in some capacity(engine,radio connects fine). i tried connecting with the car off, key in, and car on...to no avail.
-is it the car?
-the options settings?
-the laptop?

Hard to say.
ABS OK? I.e. no ABS light? Failing ABS modules of that vintage are infamous for doing strange things to the comms. Try disconnecting the ABS controller -- if that clears up the communications with the other systems, well..

i do have a toasted ABS computer...ill try unplugging that! why didnt it think of that? :)
im using 3.11 with a dumb interface. its worked for years, and i know i've connected with the other modules before...though i have not tried for awhile until recently, and quite possibly since the ABS computer started acting up.
