So rare in fact that it is believed this is the only example in North America. Meet the 2005 BMW Alpina B5, legally imported in 2012 through JK Technologies and modified to conform to U.S. emissions regulations. Acquired by the seller nearly 10 years ago, this particular E60 example is #096 of approximately 800 made. But unlike the B7, the B5 was never sent to the U.S. So layer on that only 800 were ever made in the world with the fact none ever crossed the pond under the Alpina-BMW cooperative. Power comes from a 4.4L radial ASA supercharged V8 modified from the E60 545i. Good for about 500hp and a tree-stump pulling 516 ft-lb of torque, it is mated to an Alpina tuned ZF 6-speed automatic gearbox.

This B5 is finished in Blue Onyx Metallic over smoke white/black leather and shows very well on the E60 Bangle body lines. Outside, the Alpina specific kit includes the side skirts, the front spoiler, the rear deck lid and the 19″ 20-spoke wheels. The seller notes there is a small dent on the rear bumper and some scuff rub marks under the front lip spoiler. The wheels have some slight curb rash showing and there is a small paint chip nicks on one of the door edges. The rear parking sensor located nearest the bumper dent is intermittently working. The front bumper retains its European licence plate fitment. Alpina has their own VIN, and you will notice the original 545 VIN has been crossed out at the factory. The suspension is Alpina factory.

The interior is a very clean white/black leather/alcantara combination with added Alpina door sills. The badged number plate showing build #096 rests just above your head behind the overhead light assembly. Seating is ample for 4 adults with a folding 60/40 rear split seat with ski pass through. Rear seats are heated with a fold down arm rest. The trunk space in a 5-series is large enough for all those 4 adults’ luggage and then some, perfect for getaways or around the town hauling. The Alpina embossed white leather seats appear to be in great shape. Note the 3-spoke Alpina steering wheel, this commands the shifting for the Switch-Tronic transmission through two buttons (plus and minus).

To be clear, the car is basically Alpina stock although JK Technologies, the company responsible for the importation and US compliant conversion process, had to make changes to the ECU and the exhaust system to make it DOT/EPA legal. Specifically, they reprogrammed the ECU for the US 93 octane fuel and replaced the catalytic converters. Alpina claims power output is unchanged from stock and the owner, having owned it before and after conversion, agrees. US spec front and rear bumper shock absorbers and a US spec fuel tank were also part of the conversion. The car has new rear tires but it will need two front tires soon, and the hood struts are weak. There are no known accidents and no rust is reported or seen on the car. The seller has most of the records dating back to when the car was new. It has seen 3 different countries in its life so not everything is in English.
