Default How many of you swap tires of your stock sport wheels for the winter?

How many of you swap tires off your stock sport wheels for the winter? I am looking into getting the Dunlop Winter Sport M2s and I was thinking about just paying the fee twice a year to just swap the tires off the stock sport wheels. Does this hurt the tires? Additional wear and tear? I am assuming they have to be balanced each time. I would get the M2s and keep them on from November through April (for skiing).

They don't salt the roads here, so I am not too worried about my wheels getting rocked for the winter. So I figured it would be easier just to swap tires. It would be easier for me to store them without wheels on them as well.

Default I do this (for now)...

This is the first year for winter tires for me. I had M2s mounted on my sport wheels. In the spring, I am putting the 8000Es back on, but when they wear out, I am going to new 17" wheels. Looks like I still have around 5000-8000 miles left on my 8000Es and I don't want to waste them.

FWIW, the guys at Tires Plus said swapping won't hurt the tires. They did add a couple of scratches to my wheels, though.

I'm about to try it on my 99.5 2.8QTipS. Staying with the same size tire ( opted for the Nokian NRW's ). Will see if any damage is done come spring, then perhaps pick up a new set of wheels for summer. My main motivation for going this route is that I can't stand to put ugly, cheap wheels on such a nice car.

Ugly steel 15" on my filthy black beauty, snow terminator. Easy to change.

Default Just put a set of Pilot Alpins on my sport wheels...

The biggest problem is scratching of the rims, even by a "careful" mechanic. The second biggest problem is the gummy black residue when the old glued on weights are removed, requiring careful cleaning. But the Pilot Alpins look awful nice on the sport wheels. I now get to toy with the idea of buying a set of 17 inch wheels in the spring!

Do the weights need to be reapplied once the SP8000s are put back on?

Yes. Weights are applied whenever you change tires to balance the wheel.

Put all seasons on the stock 5-spoke wheels, and put the SP8000es in storage thru March

Default Not worth the risk to the wheel.

Shabbis,

It can be more costly than buying a set of wheels to mount the snow tires. I do not know if you have ever seen how tires get mounted, but it is tough on alloy wheels. If the technican (and I use that term in high regard for some wheel people) makes a mistake you can damage the wheel or the tire. It is easily done.

I just had a set of M2 mounted on my wheels. Now all I have to do is wait for the snow to come and jack up my car and bolt on the wheels. No making appointments to get the tires changed. No having to worry if they will mar up the wheels. No worry that they strech the tire and cause it to need balancing.

Please don't be cheap on this issue. Get wheels - even if they are steel.
