Audi A6 C6: How to Replace Spark Plugs and Ignition Coils
If your A6 has hit the 55,000 mile mark, or it's been six years since you changed your spark plugs and coils, now's the time to do it. This article will walk you through the relatively easy process and save you some money.
This article applies to the Audi A6 C6 (2004-2010).
Audi recommends changing your spark plugs and ignition coils every 55,000 miles or six years, whichever comes first. And since these components play such an important role in keeping your ride running at an optimal level, there's no reason to delay their replacement. Bad coils and spark plugs can result in a loss of power, a misfire, poor fuel economy, and a rough idle or ride. Replacing these parts is an easy job that most anyone can do, so you can save quite a bit of money doing it yourself over paying the dealership to do it for you. Keep reading and we'll walk you through the process.
Materials Needed
- 10mm socket and ratchet with extension
- 16mm spark plug socket
- Pliers
- Flat head screwdriver
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Awl
- T-17 and T-18 Torx drivers
Step 1 – Gaining access to the coil packs
Locate and remove the four Torx screws that hold each coil pack in place (two on each side). Since they are recessed, you might have a hard time removing them with the Torx driver, so pliers can also be used. Remove the Phillips screw from the overflow tank and lift the tank out, then lay it on the right fender to get it out of the way. Remove the middle piece of the air filter by pulling it out. Remove the two clips and loosen the O-ring holding the air intake in place, then lift it free of the air box.
Step 2 – Replace coils and spark plugs
If you have a coil pack puller, you can use it to remove the coil packs, otherwise a flat head screwdriver can be used to pry them loose. Pry each coil loose and remove it. Use the 16mm spark plug socket to unscrew each spark plug and remove it. Check the gap of each new spark plug before inserting it (should be .032 to 0.33). Use a 16mm socket and ratchet to tighten each plug. Once all spark plugs have been replaced, insert the new coils and press them firmly into place. Reattach the harnesses and Torx screws and tighten. Reinstall the air intake pieces, then the overflow tank and screw. Start the car and listen for any hesitation or misfires, then take for a test drive.
