2020 Audi SQ8 Diesel gets Whopping Torque, 30 MPG Combined

In the wake of an intense and brand-altering emissions scandal, Audi has given an S-line treatment to its flagship Q8. Quite shockingly, the brand has chosen to power the 2020 Audi SQ8 with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 TDI. That's right, TDI. Although the SQ8 is not available in the U.S. for now, and despite announcing a heavy investment in EVs, the automaker looks to double-down on its diesel sales in markets outside the U.S.

Comeback Trail

In the days following "Dieselgate", its hard to believe Volkswagen/Audi/Porsche rep and diesel sales could bounce back to pre-2015 levels.  While sales of Volkswagen diesel cars saw gains in the motherland this last year, the rest of the world is seeing a change in attitude towards diesel as evidenced by sales numbers.  Despite this grim outlook, Audi is launching a diesel-powered S model for its flagship crossover, the Q8, for 2020.  For now, the diesel-powered 2020 Audi SQ8 will only be available in the European market.

VW Group Post-Scandal

The 2015 Volkswagen diesel emissions cheating scandal shook the automaker's sales in the U.S.  Because of this, VW Group since ceased the sale of new diesel cars in the U.S.  Having made a substantial investment (80 billion euros, or roughly $88.2 billion at current exchange rates) into EVs, VW group hopes to become the largest EV maker in the world.  Until its EVs take off, VW must rely on its current line of internal combustion motors.  Diesel sales in Europe have even wavered, except in Germany.  For example, Volkswagen says 43% of its cars sold in Germany last year were diesel (up from 39% in 2017).  Overall, however, diesel cars accounted for just 32% of all cars sold in Germany last year, down from almost 39% in 2017. Across Europe, sales were down 18% in 2018.

TORQUE

To achieve success post-Dieselgate, Audi can't afford to provide a subpar product to its customers.  For the 2020 Audi SQ8, the German automaker has given its flagship SUV a substantial power boost.  The SQ8 is powered a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 TDI with electric-powered compressor, throwing down 435 hp and a whopping 663.8 lb-ft of torque between just 1,250 and 3,250 rpm!  Given these numbers, Audi expects an impressive combined fuel economy rating of 30.2 mpg.  For comparison, the standard Q8 uses a 3.0-liter V6 TFSI motor produces 335 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque.

"Electric Powered Compressor"

Audi's growing use of mild-hybrid technology helps vehicles initial launch and acceleration at low engine speeds.  A 48V system powers the EPC using a belt alternator starter that regenerates during deceleration and feeds power back into the system's lithium-ion battery.  In short, the system effectively eliminates turbo lag and reduces fuel consumption.  While this type of response is ideal, EVs can tout instant power and torque without the need of additional tech or the consequence of any emissions, at the expense of trip range of course.

Looks are not Deceiving

From the outside, the SQ8 gets S-line specific visual upgrades including a matte-finished frame around its octagonal grill, S-specific exhaust system, and available 22-inch wheels.  Compared to Q7's standard SUV look, the Q8/SQ8 takes on a crossover coupe design, highlighted by distinct quattro fender flares and seamless coupe-like lines from the A-pillar to the C-pillar.  The more aggressive look of the SQ8 enforces its commanding road presence and authority as Audi's flagship model.

Futuristic Cockpit

As seen across Audi's lineup, the Virtual Cock and dual MMI screens give off one of the most futuristic feeling interiors on the market.  With the integration of many new driver-assist technologies and autonomy coming down the pipe, Audi has well-prepared its vehicle cabins for a transition to a self-driven future.  For now, in the driver-focused present, the SQ8 interior gives off a performance-based yet luxurious look.  With S-badging and other premium material options available, it's not hard to differentiate the SQ8 from its "standard" Q8 brothers and sisters.

Bold Moves

While its clear diesel power is more widely celebrated in markets outside the U.S., countries around the world are committed to reducing emissions and improving air quality.  For Audi to put out such an impressive product, powered by the very fuel that sparked such controversy for the brand in the first place, is bold. For now, even if the U.S. market doesn't get a diesel version, many would certainly appreciate seeing an S-line Q8 in the driveway.  The SQ8 went on sale this summer with a base price of 102,900 euros (roughly $112,000 at current exchange rates).
