Breaking Free

Audi has in the last few years managed to break free from VW Group's styling influence and the "Russian doll" design language it was known for. This has been thanks to Marc Lichte, Head of Design for Audi. The new E-Tron Sportback, RS Q8 and RS6 Avant are a testament to the hard work the team has put into delivering exemplary looks.

Still a Mistery

Due to improvements made to powertrain technology, Audi's styling will most likely soon change again. This is, especially poignant where electrified mobility is concerned. After speaking to Andreas Mindt, Audi's exterior design chief, Autocar discovered that the fate of future EVs is yet to be decided. Apart from the 2021 E-Tron GT, other upcoming EVs from Audi's performance division are still a mystery.

Big Decision

According to Mindt, the team has a lot of deciding to do for the direction of the vehicles. Take a moment and consider that electric cars with performance batteries and motors need to be cooled to ensure maximum repeatable performance.

Myths

Mindt further added that it's a myth that electric cars can run without being cooled. Their batteries and motors need to be kept off of the heat they produce. It's also a myth that electric cars can function with a long A-post and a short hood. This not only reduces energy management but also makes the dashboard bigger and increases the heat inside.

Other factors

Other factors that will affect Audi's design decisions include engineering requirements, customer preferences, safety features, aerodynamics, steering and handling abilities, as well as available trim levels.

A Few Ideas

Mindt has a few ideas for some of Audi's upcoming models. He believes that inverting everything with the grille and its surround should bring out a modern look. The inside will show bright batteries while the surrounding will have a black mask. The black color will help conceal the sensors and give the finished vehicle more of a streamlined appearance.
