Nothing Ordinary

Automotive DIYers perform interesting modifications on their cars almost every day. The usual is normally an engine swap that's done under a shed or in a garage. It often doesn't get any further than that. An Estonian man named Willem Maesalu decided to take things a notch higher with his Audi 100 Avant. He decided to turn it into a sauna after going to great lengths to get a portable one.

SaunAudi

Maesalu wanted to hire a sauna for his birthday party. But he soon realized that it was too expensive. Therefore, he decided to build one himself. The only problem was that he had no space. What he had was an Audi 100, which he made his choice for his sauna mission. Maesalu then grabbed a few friends whom he decided to work with to build the sauna. The result was a sauna on wheels nicknamed SaunAudi.

Fittings

The boys did not take any shortcuts when building the sauna. Every conventional element of a Finnish steam bath was incorporated into the project. Thermometers and wooden panels were installed within the interior. A fire stove then went into the glove box. Currently, the entire space can accommodate up to 5 people.

Chimneys

The front of this SaunAudi has two large pipes popping out of the hood cover. They act as the outlet for the smoke that's produced by the burning wood. The fire helps to warm the sauna which should be kept below 140 degrees Fahrenheit. This prevents the windows from cracking. According to Maesalu, finding the right spot for the heater was their hardest task.

A Great Experience

Those that have used the SaunAudi say that it delivers a wonderful experience. At first, it seems like a joke. The 1984 Audi 100 can be confused for a drift car with its chimney pipes sticking out of its hood. However, it works extremely well to deliver steam around the wooded interior space.

It Moves Too

The SaunAudi is still a functional vehicle. The boys who came together left the gearbox and the steering intact. This was to ensure that the car can still move about. The pedals can be revealed by removing the wooden panels placed beneath the steering wheel. They allow the car to be driven around, but not on public roads. A lack of seats and seatbelts makes the sauna not street legal.

Price

It only cost Willem Maesalu and the boys $225 to build the SaunAudi. he charges about 85 dollars a day for anyone who wishes to rent it. So far, it has gathered a good number of steam enthusiasts and remains a popular option for many who can't afford to hire a portable sauna.
