Highest Award Possible

After receiving complete redesigns for their 2019 models, the Audi Q3 and Audi A7 recently earned good scores in all six of IIHS' crashworthiness tests. The Q3 earned the highest possible rating of Top Safety Pick+ while the A7 scored a Top Safety Pick rating.

Qualifications

To get the Top Safety Pick rating, a car must score well in its moderate overlap front, side, head resistant, roof strength and small overlap front on its driver's side. It also needs an "Acceptable" or "Good" rating in the small overlap front test on the passenger's side. Other tests include an "Acceptable" or "Good" headlight rating and a "Superior" or "Advanced" rating for front crash prevention. For the Top Safety Pick+ award, the vehicle requires a "Good" headlight rating and passenger-side small overlap rating.

Test Crashes

The most important part of the test was a round of crash tests in which the A7 hatchback and Q3 crossover passed with flying colors. Both scored the highest rating in all six tests and got to earn the Top Safety Pick+ award. Getting an "Acceptable" rating in the small overlap front test on the passenger's side automatically disqualifies a car from earning the best safety award.

Collision Avoidance Technology

The A7 owes its consistent "Good" ratings to its forward collision avoidance system. The system is able to stop the A7 at speeds of up to 12 mph and 25 mph. The frontal crash avoidance technology was ranked as "Superior" and comes as standard in both cars.

Headlights

Unfortunately, the A7 was held back from scooping up all the best awards by its headlights. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave it a "Marginal" rating while the Premium Plus trim got an "Acceptable" score for its LED projector headlights. However, the top-of-the-tier Prestige trim got a 'Poor" rating for having excessive glare.

High-Beam Assist

Both the Q3 and A7 come with High-Beam Assist which switches between the low and high beams depending on oncoming traffic. All trims except the base model are available with this technology.

Improvement in the Q3

The additional plus sign in the Top Safety Pick+ rating was given to the Q3 since it showed great improvement from the vehicle's previous generation. IIHS had previously given it a "Poor" score for having no forward collision and avoidance system and for its headlights performance. With new headlights and front crash prevention technology, the car was rated "Superior" alongside the A7.

IIHS-Approved Headlights

To get the IIHS-approved headlights in the Q3, buyers will need to upgrade to the Premium Plus model. The price for this trim starts at $38,795 without any of the other available options.
