Slideshow: Audis of the Future

Audi is a popular car in the movies, and sci-fi artists have gone to town imagining what the quattro darling might look like decades from now. With what we know about the officially projected plans of Audi, that brilliant future we see in the movies starts getting easier to take seriously.

Audi Fleet Shuttle quattro from Ender's Game.

It's a lot of fun to speculate about the future, especially when it comes to our favorite auto makes. Speculating hi-tech "what ifs" is by no means limited to movies, but they are a rare instance where outlandish sci-fi designs can be given sufficient funding to be realized and manage to be economically feasible. Such was the case with Audi's partnership with the film adaptation of Ender's Game. Based on the science fiction novel by Orson Scott Card, Audi created this "Fleet Shuttle quattro" as a far-future analog to the cars we know and love.

The future should reflect the present.

Audi wasn't licensing a special design like this out of the kindness of their hearts of course. Like any movie product placement, the Fleet Shuttle quattro was there in order to help sell Audi cars. Of course, as an advertisement, the fantasy wouldn't be an effective sales tool if it didn't reflect the personality of Audi in real life. True to form, the model in Ender's Game shares the smooth curves and soft shape of its dealership counterparts.

The film itself wasn't spectacular, but if nothing else, it's interesting for the lengths Audi took with the film as part of their marketing campaign.

I, Robot shows us the Audi of 2035.

Alex Proyas' sci-fi spectacle I, Robot is set in the not-so-distant future of 2035. Among other things, it got infamous for the egregious amount of product placement in it; for whatever screen time Will Smith isn't peddling shoes, you'd better believe Audi got their spot in. Interestingly enough, while the film's depiction of a 2035 where androids are everywhere seems far-fetched, the film's prediction of a self-driving Audi is looking more likely than ever.

As an added note: considering that the film came out in 2004, as of 2018 we are almost as close to the future year it was set in as we are now distanced from the time of its release. Pretty spooky to think about; we're already living in the sci-fi setting of the past.

Behold the Audi Lunar quattro.

You can find plenty of instances in the past where Audi has been at the cutting edge of technology. However, we're not sure they've ever been so ambitious as to shoot for the moon-- of course, we mean that literally in this case.

The machine pictured is the Audi Lunar quattro. Interestingly enough, this is one of the items on this list that is grounded in real-life. In partnership with the German firm PTScientists, Audi is collaborating on a private sector trip to the moon. Putting their automotive know-how to good use, the Lunar quattro design shares the same meticulous attention to detail Audi are known for in their cars. The proposed 2019 launch date is fairly lofty at this point, but considering how much potential the private sector has shown lately for space exploration, it's very well possible that a familiar four-ring logo could be seen on the lunar surface before too long.

Audi's self-driving concept cars.

Audi's got a couple of friends waiting for you in the future. Their names are Elaine and Alcon, artificially intelligent driving cars that will be able to react to the perils of the road like any breathing human... only better. According to Audi, these AI cars will be "both intelligent and empathetic," and will continuously adapt to make the very best for their passengers. Elaine and Alcon are your chauffeurs of the future!

Thanks to Audi, this is actually becoming science fact over fiction, and sooner than you might think. The self-driving technology for their Audi Elaine and Audi Alcon self-drivers has been getting road tested since 2015 when a self-driving A7 made a trek from San Francisco to Las Vegas. Audi was actually the first automaker to get to a real-world test license for self-driving vehicles in California and Nevada; they got the initial go-ahead as far back as 2013.

The future's closer than you think...

While the android rebellions of I, Robot probably won't be happening by 2035 (we'll probably have to wait until the 2060s to get that in real life!) the idea of self-driving cars seems to be coming true actually sooner than predicted. Then again, if Ford of all companies is now saying that electric cars will outnumber gas vehicles within the next 15 years, we suppose that means anything is possible.
