The A8 L Security Model is a Heavy-Duty Limousine

Audi has introduced the most exclusive version of its A8 limousine. Based on the brand's long-wheelbase A8, this ultra-rare variant is built to keep its passengers comfortable and safe. Very safe. The 2021 model year A8 L Security is part limousine, but also many parts armored vehicle. It is built to serve embassies and VIPs who require stealthy protection when moving about. 

Blue light brigade

There is not much to distinguish the 'Security' version from other Audi A8 limousines. Don't expect special badges or trick aero bits. This is a car developed to be special, but also subtle - in the extreme. Perhaps the only real feature to note, with regards to the A8 L Security's exterior styling, is its roof-mounted convoy light, which is blue. Everything that is elegant about the conventional A8 styling language, is kept in place, with this armored version.

Emergency lights behind the grille

Audi followers will notice the A8 L Security has a slightly different grille detail, to other A8s. Behind the grille, there is an additional set of LED light bars, which function as emergency flash repeaters, when an A8 L Security needs to get somewhere in a hurry. By using these 'hidden' lights behind the grille, any A8 L Security driver can signal their intention, for everyone else, to get out the way.

This A8 runs the S8 engine

The A8 is powered by Audi's most potent V8 engine. Unlike other A8 models, the L Security uses the S8 high-performance engine. This twin-turbocharged 4-liter V8 is good for 563hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. Those numbers have to move a lot more car, as the armored A8 is heavier than any S8, which means 0-60mph in 6.2 seconds and a lowish top speed of 130mph. Although all other A8s run a governed top speed of 155mph, the L Security version is so much heavier, that its top speed has been limited, to ensure consistent braking performance.

Keeping its passengers very safe inside

The A8 L Security cabin might look similar to any A8 limousine, but those doors and windows are very different. VR9 specification bulletproofing means that the L Security can resist most handguns, assault rifles, and even a hand grenade attack. There is even a fire suppression system, with strategic nozzles in the wheel arches, engine bay, and around the fuel tank.

It can sustain its own atmosphere

The A8 L Security also features a very trick climate control system. If the car is at risk of being overcome with smoke or any toxic pollutant, it can close all ventilation, and circulate a secure air supply. An onboard storage tank supplies this emergency air reserve. It takes Audi's best technicians no less than 400 hours to build a new A8 L Security, with all its robust security features.

You pay a very full price

The A8 L Security is both the most expensive and heaviest Audi in production. With all its security features and armoring, this A8 weighs no less than 8432lb. Despite that mass, it can run for up to 50 miles, with no air in the tires, thanks to a robust run-flat sidewall. All the custom security does not come cheap, with Audi's A8 L Security pricing at a very dear $750 000. For those customers who need its blend of luxury, stealth, and security, that is a price worth paying.
