The R8 LMS GT2 is Good for the Public But We Can't Have It
Audi's new R8 LMS GT2 is their fastest Custom Racing program car to date, which just makes us want one even more.
One Upping Yourself
Like most manufacturers, Audi is constantly one-upping itself in the world of racing. Their latest effort, the R8 LMS GT2, is the most recent example of this. Surprisingly, it's faster than both the GT3 and GT4 cars, even though it technically slots in between them. And that's all the more reason to covet this potent machine.

Cart Before Horse
Even more so interestingly, the GT2 has been created ahead of its relevant championship, which starts in 2020. Regardless, it's a familiar version of Audi's wildly popular Customer Racing program lineup that improves upon its predecessors in nearly every way.

Spectacular Looks
In terms of looks, the GT2 car features a slim cockpit and Spyder-like body panels with a massive roof-mounted air scoop, giant sideblades, and exaggerated flared fenders. It's a spectacular looking thing with obvious nods to the past.

Sensational Sounds and Power
Sans air restrictor, the naturally-aspirated V10 engine produces a stout 640 horsepower, all while serenading your years with what Audi promises to be some pretty sensational noises while the GT2 whips around the track.

Bridging the Gap
Even though it's faster, the GT2 R8 was designed to bridge the gap in Audi's lineup without competing against the GT3 in terms of lap times. It was also built specifically for drivers who appreciate the high longitudinal dynamics of powerful sports cars.

Made for Gentlemen
"In this way, we have created a car specifically for gentleman drivers who have been the backbone of GT racing for decades," explained Chris Reinke, Head of Audi Sport customer racing. "Modern GT3 race cars have increasingly evolved into a class for pros. With the Audi R8 LMS GT2, we are now closing this gap and making a car available that is tailored to meet the needs of this customer group."

Priced Right
The GT2 is also priced right in the middle of the lineup. Those looking for pro-driver-level thrills on a slight "budget" only need to cough up around $375,000 to slip behind the wheel of this incredible machine.

Great Alternative
One thing's for sure - the GT2 is certainly an exciting prospect for those who were priced out of GT3 competition as it evolved into a highly professional category. According to Audi, the car is also much easier to drive as well and isn't terribly demanding on more amateur drivers.

Coming Soon
And even though there aren't any existing classes for the GT2 to participate in just yet, they're on the way. Next year, owners will be able to race in both the GT Sports Club in Europe and the GT World Challenge America.

Starter Pack
