Can I use a typical non euro 5W30 synthetic in my car?
#11
As I said, 5w-40 is three times as thick in the cold and at operating temp it is still overly thick compared to light oils that have the same wear control, reducing performance and mpg. These are facts, not speculation.
I'd be surprised if anyone looked at the data and actually asked themselves why they run overly thick oil to begin with. Before forming an "opinion", a look at the data would help guide the ultimate analysis. Starting point for a 2.7t, it's very easy on oil to begin with. You won't find a bad UOA from a 2.7t, so why is the oil choice so very important?
That being said, here's a UOA that just came in from a friend who is a VAG mechanic himself. A 2012 2.0TFSI A4 on 5w-40....

No magic going on here, high Fe wear.
So really, without any comparative analysis of ANY UOAs, you really don't know which oil/engine combo give the lowest wear rates, and the inherent well-being checks of the engine like the presence of anti-freeze or traces of silicon from a leaking filter or intake...
So, the case of one new engine, a 2.7 that was babied on 5w-40 with no empirical data isn't the final word for all 2.0T drivers. This is the 2.0T Forum, correct?
