Just picked up a 1997 A4 saloon (1.8) with some issues. The issues are:


1) The drivers door will not open. The car has to be opened from the passenger side and then climb across to the drivers seat.

2) The central locking doesn't work. When turning the key in the passenger door it unlocks the passenger door only and beeps the horn once. The motor/pump thing in the boot start whirring away and eventually stops.


What will the problems be? Are they likely to be linked?

Sounds like two problems, a broken link in the drivers door, and either a vacuum leak or a bad pump (the disk in the pump breaks up).

Ok so after I have actually collected the car now and got it home and had a chance to look at it, I CAN get the drivers door to open.

The key in the drivers door lock does NOT unlock (or lock) the door. It sets the pump in the boot off, but does not lock that door. The guy I bought it off said a spring fell out of somewhere - possibly the catch. Pulling the interior door once unlocks it, and a second time opens the door. The exterior door handle then works too.

The pump doesn't seem to be doing anything - no air or vacuum coming out of either of the outlets. So a new pump is probably whats needed their. Regarding the drivers door I am not sure if its the catch, or some sort of rod, or the lock barrel.
