2002: The first aftermarket tool which supports 7-Digit SKC codes and is able to access modules requiring proprietary VAG modes on the KWP-2000 protocol ...

A stab in the dark, which is cheap.

If you remove the MFS plug from the socket by the transmission, and see if it is corroded etc. clean it up and see if it improves things.
??? No, its not, reverse is a mechanical gear, it will operate with no power going to the transmission at all. With no electronic control the transmission will have 4th forward and reverse. If its slipping, or has no reverse, the trans is junk.

Thanks to all of you for your answer, another question, Is it possible that the reason why I lost my reverse is because my trans is low on fluid? My reverse is working it move backwards when I shift to reverse, BUT when I step on the gas pedal it only rev.

another question. what model of transmission is on my audi A4? mine is audi a4 1997 1.8 (no turbo), front wheel drive, not tiptronic.

I attached a picture of my shift stick.

@bydand
maybe I will start working on my car this coming weekend.

So what you are saying is my problem is electrical and not mechanical?

so is it possible that rebuild or change transmission is not necesarry? I read some thread and they said something like clutch drum or torque converter.

Hoping that it is only mfs. Lol

Jjyerro,

I am saying get it checked for codes with something which reads Audi codes.

It could be lots of things, a few I have suggested, and worth checking easily and cheaply.

Do not give up hope.

and yes it could be many things, which we will not know unless you have the car scanned and read the codes, which may point you in the correct area for further checking.

Gather more info, and google, many boards and many threads which may have information on the issues you are having.

Good luck.

The old school 4 speed. I had no Idea they ever put those in the B5 chassis. But anything goes in other countries I guess. As far as fluid check, it should have a dipstick. If you look up any information on the trans, just look for Audi 90, Audi 100/old body A6, Audi Cabriolet all use that same 4 speed.

This transmission is actually just the longitudinal version of the 4 speed Auto used in Jetta, Golf, Eurovan, Passats in the early 90's
