It is hard to say about the Neutral Safety Switch. But someone linked you to one that was WAAAAAY more expensive so I wanted to straighten you out.

At any rate, the neutral safety switch is an important part of your starting system. This device only allows your car to turn over when in neutral or park, so that damage does not occur to your engine. When this device fails, it may cause a no start scenario.

I would suspect you are experiencing and issue with the Neutral Safety Switch being defective and not letting your car go into reverse because it doesn't think your car has stopped going forward. Also, it doesn't think your car should be allowed to go into drive because it is "stuck" in neutral.

As for other issues: The dealership thinks this is the issue, your codes direct you to this as the issue and if you search the topic you'll see many people with the same issue. Now it is hard to say that the switch is 100 percent the problem over the forums, but it appears that you aren't alone on this. I'd replace the switch.

Thanks for your reply. Your link to the part is pointing to 2 different part numbers

http://www.ecstuning.com/Audi-B5_A4-...aign=postreply

Part# 01V919821B and part# 01V919821D . My Audi is 1997 1.8T Automatic Quattro. Is there a difference between these parts?

Yes, the switch is specific to your VIN. What is your VIN, I'll help you out?

Actually, 1997 would be 1V919821D

Thus, you need this:

Thanks to everybody. I got a new Multi Function Switch from ECSTuning and it fixed the problem.

Once again. Thanks to all.

Funny thing is my mechanic told me that my old switch might also be working. Anyway since i bought a new switch I went ahead and replaced it.

The brake light error code
00526 - Brake Light Switch-F
may not be an error code.
Prior to reading the error codes, step on the brake with the vag-com connected and the ignition switch on. Then go and scan the trans for error codes.

As for the other code you can just erase the error code with your scanner.

FYI, I have reset the codes with a regualr scanner at Autozone and fixed the MFS problem. It's worth a try.
