Default Starting problems

1995 1.8 has intermittent staring problems. Every now and again the car will basically start then immediately cut out. The car has almost started then will cut out 4 or 5 times before starting properly. It never cuts out whilst running & happens in summer or winter. Could it be the engine management system?

Default Ok, trick question.....

what car are you talking about? A4's came out with the 1.8 "T" in '97. Maybe you have a '99.5?

Might be the fuel pump, are there any dtc's? Check engine light?

Default Re: Starting problems

I had a similar problem with my 1.8T. If I started the car (cold) to move in the garage and then shut it off, occasionally the next start would result in a rough idle or even completely cutting out.

Here is my wild guess...you may have a leaky injector or two. If your problem only occurs after the car has not been driven for a day or two, a slight leak in an injector may allow fuel to build up in a cylinder. This may be causing the engine management to try to compensate for a rich conditon that does not exist once the engine runs for a minute.

An easy check of the fuel system...turn the iginiton on but do not start the car. Listen for the electric fuel pump. It should not run for more than a few seconds to build up the proper pressure. Extended run times indicate a problem/leak in the fuel injection system.

FWIW, on higher mileage VW/Audis leaking valve seals can allow oil to build up in cylinders. If your car blows a little smoke on start up (after sitting for a day or two), get the valve seals replaced.

Goodluck

I have a UK 1.8litre basic A4 model from 1995/6.
The starting problems occur at all times, i.e. just been driving, will stop then the car won't start, there is no apparent pattern to this problem.

Default Is it misfiring at all, or does it just stall?

Could be a number of things... items to check.

-Change fuel brands and see if that helps. I had terrible problems starting/stalling with my 1.8t with some fuels, and none with others.

-If it is misfiring it could be your fuel pump, or ignition coil amplifiers.

-When were the fuel filter & spark plugs last replaced? Were the spark plugs gapped correctly?

The engine management should not be the problem if you've made it this far without problems, are you getting a "check engine" light? Have someone with Vag-Com/OBD-II connector check out the codes for you.
