The fix will probably not show up on a standard VIN check since it was done as needed to replace the seal (and mic?) and was not universal. If the repair was done, it would show up on the car's service record. The seal issue was not a bad part but was improperly installed at the factory as I understand it.

I just had my MY12 A6 in for this issue. They tracked it to a TSB (I'll get the number) that replaces one of the air vents that apparently has a microphone in it. I have to go back in since they didn't have it in stock.
I checked it out and with the air going it sounds like a wind tunnel on the other end. I turn the air off and it clears up and sounds perfect. Weird?!? At least I'm still under warranty and it's getting fixed free of charge.

There's no microphone I'm aware of in an air vent which would be the last location I would imagine to place a mic. It's located in the overhead console. The issue some were having, if you read through the thread, was some had a defective seal around the mic that when an air vent is pointed anywhere toward it, the sound is affected (much like the wind tunnel effect you mentioned). The TSB for replacing the mic resolved it. It's puzzling why they would order an air vent (which is just a piece of plastic) to correct a mic issue.
