Default AWOL Cruise Control Module

So CC on my son's 2000 A6 stopped working recently. Web searches tell me it's a common problem with crack in solder joints, that can be easily fixed with resoldering the joint. Bentley & web seacrch tell me CC module is mounted next to blower, behind the glovebox. Not Mine! No CC module located anywhere in that area. I've seen some comments about maybe it's been combined into the ECU... but does anyone know for certain where it's located on our car? If in ECU, does it have similar solder cracking experience & repair approach? I was all set to do this easy solder repair only to find the CC has gone AWOL.

The 2000 service manual shows the cruise control module where you describe it, but the 2001 says that it is now part of the ECM. Since both years with the 2.7t engine use EPC, my (educated) guess is that it's part of the ECM. The ECM does not have that propensity for solder cracking.

If it stopped working completely, it is possible that one of the switches (brake or clutch) is bad. Could also be the wiring between the ECM and the switches.

I have attached the pertinent page from the service manual.
