Default camshaft 2.5 tdi help

Hi
doing some work on my a6 i had some knocking sound coming from the engine i have been told its the hydraulic valve lifters i took the car to the mechanic to have a look..just wondering when the camshaft needs to be changed how do i know its bad ???

Why would you be concerned about the camshaft if the problem are
the lifters?

it has some scratches on it but nothing to bad just wondering if its normal or its shouldnt be like that

Did you see the cam lobes or did the tech tell you this?

It should be changed when the lifter is changed based on that you have said it's scored or potentially worn "lobes or lobe".

Thanks it will be changed we ordered the parts

If you plan on keeping the car for a while its best to do it the right way once, those diesels have higher valve spring rates over gasoline engines so use good oil and change it a couple K-miles before its recommended.
