Sounding like a diesel Part 2...
This is a follow up from yesterday. 2001.5 62K A4 1.8T 5spd with regualr maintenace
Without driving the car hard on the way home, by the time I pulled into the driveway (5 miles) the car is sounding like a diesel again. I pulled the engine cover off and tried not to burn my ear.
The sound is coming from the back of the motor in the exact location of the cam tensioner or combi valve.
Here is what I need to know. What exactly is bad or how to test for the bad part? Anyone have a tech how to on solving this problem? If this situation is not fixed quickly will engine damage occur and what do these two items (cam tensioner / combi) do?
Thanks.

then keep driving it until it does. both of mine "rattle" and they've been doing it for a long time
I think I started complaining about the cam tensioner at the dealer at my 20k appointment, then 30, 40 and 50 -- and they said it was not an abnormal sound and when they've replaced them, it comes right back.
I just turned 83k the other day.
If you want to replace them, search for Greyhound Guy's web site that has write-ups. He did both to his '01.
