I followed Kris' Tech article (See: https://www.audiworld.com/tech/eng111.shtml) and it worked perfect: enough space between radiator and engine for changing the belt tensioner.

Once again, thanks to the great advice on this forum I was able to replace my serpentine belt and tensioner. With 240,000 miles, my 2.8L 1999 A6 Avant's serpentine tensioner bearing froze and threw the belt. The belt was torn up but no further damage occurred; I made it home on battery voltage. With covers, weatherstrip, intake, vent hose, ignition wires at coils, and electric fan removed I had plenty of room to make the repairs. Thanks to all out there, especially for the links to the correct routing of that belt. That tensioner should have been replaced at 200,000 with timing belt job.
