I have an 04 A6. First Audi I have owned. Between this forum and Google and a hand full of specialty tools I took on the task of pulling my motor and working on it comfortably on my own. You would want to invest in the Bentley Manual, Cam lock tool, and the chain tensioner tool ($12 on Ebay). I am not an avid car maechanic as I have grown out of building tuner cars and wanted something thats just fun and nice to drive. Also gets through snow with good gas mileage.
It is an annoyance to work on. But can be done by oneself. Or find a decent mechanic. I live in a small town and mechanics treat people with German cars very differently and charge a lot more than any other car because they are scared to work on them.
