Default Bad Ignition Switch?

Got into the car this morning, ignition switch turns but no response. No dash display, nothing. Just the clock displays. Radio works, etc. The battery is good, tried hooking up jumper cables. Is this common? Is it a possible park interlock or antitheft issue?

RESOLVED - I poured through various threads and found my issues were the same as the symptoms of the J518 Access/Start module failure and the $3000 repair bill to replace the steering column. Vag-com couldn't access as ignition key was not responding. I give many props to the gentleman that posted this video:

Turned on hazards, pushed on brake pedal, and held high beams. Vag-com connected and pulled access/start communication failure code. I cleared the DTC and the ignition started right up. I'm starting to remember why I've avoided owning an Audi over the years, but this is one of those rare easy fixes. Now I just hope it doesn't happen again as I'd hate to have to haul my laptop with me everytime I leave the house!

1)I've been to their shop, great guys.

2)There is a wire going into the start access module that causes the problems. Some kind of relay wire that brings in too much voltage which eventually burns out the module or something. Find it and cut it before it does more damage to the module. There are directions on this website.

Well, it looks like the Acc/start module failure is happening intermittently now. I have to clear DTC to get the car started again. Looks like I'm going to replace the Acc/start module with a used one before it dies completely. It's been about 3 weeks since my last major repair of replacing the timing chain tensioners. This car is turning into a real pain in my ***. I'm really missing my Infinti G35, for over 160k+ miles I put gas, oil, tires, and brake pads on it, thats it! BTW, I went to there website, I didnt see a link about the relay wire?

Thanks, got the link. I'm going to have to program the new J518 module to my keys. My Audi dealer here in Tampa absolutely sucks, and I will not risk taking my car there. I'm thinking about 2 possible routes:

1. Replacing with a used steering column and matching ignition key. Does J518 acc/start authorisation module solely control key coding or do other controllers? Need to research this further.

2. Replacing just the J518 and recoding it. I found this link but I'm not sure about it, but it looks feasible.

Wow, who ever finds this stuff. I never would've thought that holding the high beam flash + hazards + brake pedal would allow the VAG to connect without a key in the ignition. Black magic.

I am hoping that you do not need that expensive steering column fix!

I've been emailing KermaTDI (quick responses!) in regard to this, they say they can reprogram the ECU for $155 and bypass this idiotic acc/start auth module completely. I'm waiting for a response from them to be sure but it looks promising!

I'm still waiting for their response but I have a feeling it won't work. The Acc/Start module verifies the rfid from the key chip then unlocks steering column and powers ECU/starter. I don't think simply bypassing ECU programming will work as I don't see how a failed J518 can unlock the steering. But now I'm thinking it may be the ignition key switch transponder as this is the code I'm pulling:
