Default transmission stuck in first

I drove to NYC today and everything was normal, as we were leaving the city and my transmission does not want to shift out of first gear, stays if first up to 5000 rpms under light load. Since I was driving in NYC with traffic and lights it was hard to get consistent symptoms but it would eventually shift out of first then the rest of the gears would work normally, then at the next light it would again resist leaving first gear again, but after it did everything else would work fine. Decided to eat dinner in the city, so after sitting for an hour and a half the car drives home perfectly. Any ideas? Almost felt like it was stuck in 1st gear in tiptronic mode, but it was not in tiptronic mode.

Was it in Sport mode? Was traffic heavy?

From earlier posts you were discussing changing the tranny fluid and also complaining about a clicking noise when turning. Have you recently changed the ATF? What was the resolution on the clicking noise? They may be related to your current problem. Which engine are you running? how many miles on the car?

Did this in both D and S, but again only once for 15 minutes. Have the new ATF, have not changed it. 4.2 motor, with 82k miles, doubt it's related to the clicking noise which is only happens on slow turns, pretty sure that's a wheel bearing gone bad.

After some online research I'm thinking (more like wishful think) that it's not the actual transmission but a sensor or solenoid. Somebody on another site suggested the selector sensor control unit was a cheap printer circuit board under the gear selector and was weak point on A4's. I surprised my issue seems rare.

I had almost the same issue in my 2005. The transmission wouldn't shift out of first unless I changed it manually. After a while the transmission wouldn't acknowledge the car was in park either. The dealership ended up replacing three sensors I believe and the car drives fine now. They did have issue trying to figure out which sensor it was so that why they replaced three sensors instead of just one.

Thanks, that's what I was looking for. Did they list the senors on the receipt and how much did they charge?

I do believe they did list what sensors they were. I had to pay for it because I was out of warranty so it did have the price. I will look for you when I get home this evening.

Sorry this took me so long to get for you but I totally forgot.

The parts they listed are:
4F1-713-105 MECHANISM $408
1K2-945-511-RDW SWITCH $11.40
4F0-910-132-L SWITCH $254.40
4F1-820-951-E-1HA OUTLET $198.00

i didn't have to pay for the last two parts because they changed those parts but the issue didn't clear so they left the new parts in and didn't charge me. There was a pretty good write up on the invoice I will try to take a picture of it and post it.

Cepausm, thank you very much. You saved me much time and money I owe you a beer or two.

So I got my laptop back from my daughter and VC'ed the car and low and behold what do I see? Engine and tranny fault due to "brake lamp switch improbable value". So I buy a brake lamp switch from my local Audi dealer for $13.01 including tax and so far so good.

Cepausm, dunno if I should say anything but if you look closely at your repair invoice, it seems like this $13 brake switch was the part the finally cured your car as well. However, your car didnt recognize park and locked the key in the ignition, mine did not, so many the shifter assembly was required.
