The $1,000 is to realign/re-calibrate the cameras.

Old thread, but my wife just had the grille over the sensor stolen on her 2012 A6, (Left side) and local mechanic could not align it, so we went to the dealer. Service writer made appointment after the part was obtained ($233)!, but failed to "give enough time" for the alignment. Have to make another appointment and was told it would take a full day and cost $1040! Anyone have an idea why it is so expensive?

It is a multi-multi step, time consuming process. Take a look at the instructions to do a rearview camera alignment (I found this in another message on this forum). I am quite sure all alignment procedures are just as involved.

I did have the front bumper and hood repainted and front grill replaced, but I believe the sensors were put back in place correctly. Perhaps the front grill is the culprit here?

See pictures below. Any insights would be appreciated!

I think I know the answer to the your issue.
When is comes to ACC, most systems use a radar transmitter and receiver located in the grill or front bumper. However, there are some systems that utilize a dual system of bumper mounted and windshield mounted sensors that control the vehicle front-to-back (ACC) and side-to-side (lane departure). These systems will require dealer calibration if the windshield or sensor is replaced or displaced. Audi and Volvo systems are two examples that utilize the through windshield sensor for their ACC systems. In summary try having the sensor in the windshield recalibrated. Hope this helps.
