The dealer said the source of an oil leak on my 2008 A8L was due to the oil filter housing o-ring and wants $650 to replace it. Where is this o-ring and how difficult is it to DIY?

It is on the oil filter housing which attaches to the engine. Just like the dealer said. Consult the service manual for your vehicle and engine for details. Only you can gauge how difficult the job would be for you. There are two different engines available for your vehicle. The filter housings are different for each engine.

Its the 4.2L V8. My main concern was that it looks like I have to remove the intake manifold to access the lower bolts on the oil filter housing.

I had the same issue on my 07 and I fixed it myself a few months ago. It was a lot of work, but not too bad. Altogether I think it cost me about $100 in gaskets and O-rings. But then I broke the coupling coming off the intake manifold which set me back about $225. I found a great write up on how to remove the intake manifold....let me know if you want it.
