1990 Coupe Quattro Transmission Problems
The tranny on my 90 CQ has shifted poorly since I bought it. 3rd and 4th were tricky but you could shift it if you stuck your tongue out in the right way. One day I was driving and went to go to 3rd and it was like there was a wall there. Same for 4th. Looked under the car the linkage was warn out so I sourced the last one in the country to replace it. Didn't fix the problem. Tranny won't even shift without the linkage attached. Something has came apart in the transmission. Has anyone else ran into the problem. Is it fixable or should I start looking for a trans to swap into it. What trans are able to be put in car without changing axles or driveline.

sounds like syncro issues. that car had the 01A transmission, it is fairly common, it was also in the 80/90 quattros so basically 88-91 small chassis quattros received them. The 80/90 version has a taller 5th gear too which is nice. I have sold those transmissions for 100-150 bucks. that is what you should expect to pay before shipping. I've shipped them from utah to ohio for around 100 bucks with ForwardAir.

Update: just moved the car a few days ago after it's been sitting for a few years. Found the shift linkage bolt that holds the shifter inside the tranny in place had vibrated out. Put it back in and car shifts great now.

Wondering if the bolt that had vibrated loose was accessible from the outside of the transmission or if you have to remove the trans to get to it. Think my car may have the start of the same issue.

It's accessible from out side. It's in passenger side and it's a torx head. T55 I believe.
