Friend with 90 tranny problems...
My friends car will not engage in either 5th or reverse. All other gears work fine. What could the problem be? Any ideas? Problems started when my friend peeled out in first gear on a slippery road. Also if he forces it into 5th he cannot get it out witout pulling very hard...car is a 95 Audi 90 5 speed...
Thanks,

In my old pickup truck I have to stop to shift if I change directions...
but I can shift from 2nd to 3rd to 4th and from 4th to 3rd. 1st to 2nd doesn't work, in fact it's really hard to get it out of first. Sometimes I can't shift from 3rd to 4th or from 4th to 3rd. I got a clutch problem.
You might want to have him really test all the possibilites. Try checking the master cylinder fluid level.
Someone on the board probably knows exactly what is wrong.

Miktip, could it be...
on th 016 tranny's there is a thing called the "Detent for 5th/reverse gears with pin rod." This is attached to the push rod and looks like it is moved by an adjusting rod that is attached to the front shift rod. Does this sound familiar to you? Could it be that it has broken or become jammed? Is the 016 tranny even set up the same as the 90's tranny? Just checking...

The 90 uses the 01A Quattro gearbox..........
Which is very simular in basic design to the 016 it replaces.
It does have the 5th gear shift rod and detent.
They are very well built, and difficult to
damage or jam. Not impossable though........
Chances are slim the gearbox's is damaged, as the
01A is the platform for the "stout" 01E, S4, gearbox.
Thats why I'm leaning towards the shift mechanism. The clutch would normally show damage before the gearbox with these units. Especially after a "launch" wheel spinning start.

Miktip, I also forgot...
To tell you...the car is FWD, not Quattro...my friend took it in to a small import repair shop and they said he needs a new tranny. I think they are trying to fleece him out of money...I was'nt with him so I dont know what they actually checked. I really think it's linkage/mount related...any more ideas?
