Default 2001 tranny questions

My wife has a 2001 Allroad with 104,000 miles on it. The transmission has just started to develop a lag , so to speak, when shifting into reverse. The transmission hesitates for a second or two, lurches a little then goes into reverse. This only happens when its cold. Any ideas as to what would cause this? The car in not showing any trouble codes.
Also, should I have the transmission power flushed and the filter changed, or is it possible to change the filter and fluid myself? I'm still learning about the car as it is my first Audi. Thanks.
