Default Aftermarket drivers in A6 C5 (avant) bose subwoofer enclosure

As topic - anyone tried this? I've heard speakings of such on the forum, but not been able to track actual posts about someone actually doing this and their experience.

I don't have the Bose option (nor a stock HU), and I'm looking to do an aftermarket setup on a reasonable budget - without a woofer box that needs removing to utilize full trunk space. I have some experience with custom installs, but constructing a box that would efficiently utilize the volume available behind the rear trim, would way too big an undertaking. I hear the bose sub (as is) is "a bit crap", and was hoping maybe the enclosure itself could lend itself to a better experience with different drivers (and a separate amp, of course).

So - any experiences here? I'd be glad to hear what you guys and gals have to say.

As there is "nothing back there" now, I'll be pulling interconnects and power under the carpet, and probably 'up the wire gauge into the doors - thinking I might amp the door components too.
