Saw a 1-series for the first time today. Once lowered and on some nice wheels it'll look acceptable.

Maybe so...
...although I thought I'd read pretty positive things in Automobile and R&T.
But in any case, in a real world setting it felt pretty good to me. No, I wasn't pushing it to the limits, but given that I don't do track days it's the real world feel of a car that matters to me.
