So why does the BBC Worldservice use the American Billion instead of the correct thousand million?

So why does the BBC Worldservice use the American Billion instead of the correct thousand million?
According to my dictionary:
Billion = one million million or 10 to the power of 12 in German also Billion
Trillion = one million million million or 10 to the power of 18 in German also Trillion
But the BBC Worldservice, which should be the defender and teacher of all things British, uses the devalued American billion when reporting company results etc.
As a staunch European I am appalled by this.
