2.2 Turbo - newbie - versions, block, limits
Since my days with the inline 5 in my Audi 100 Avant (2.3l, non turbo), I am longing for the 2.2 turbo I5.
Once in a while I see an Avant or A4 coupe.
Being a turbo guy, the project would include a large turbo. Before diving into another project car:
a) what version of the I5 turbo 2.2 are around? Differences? Most suitable version for 'big turbo'
b) what are sane limits of the block?
c) what are the performance bottlenecks/weak points that need to be circumvented/upgraded?
d) What is the most common approach to tuning? Getting chipped ECU (based on specified MAF sensor and injector), or stand alone (or piggy standalone)?

2.2L 20V turbo AAN, ABY, ADU and 3B use the same block and internals. The head is the same for late AAN, ABY and ADU. Early AAN og 3B don't have the bracket for the cam position sensor.
The block, crankshaft and pistons hold 1000hp, but you have to change the rods. + alot of supporting mods. Everyhting have to be measured, honed and balanced. You can even use a 2.5L I5 diesel block. Engine code AAT or AEL
