how 'bout making it like a bracket...everyone writes down their expected best laptime
and winner is the one who gets closest to his/her own guess. so it's not totally driving-independent.

The competition at LMK is usually timed races for placement, then the finals are based on position
Much like real races.
They have a whole set of new karts, new track, etc...to help alleviate any concerns of unequal equipment.
