Default 2016 Q5 MMI system storage questions

  1. does the MMI use a spinning HD or a SSD drive?
  2. What is the size of the drive?
  3. if it is a spinning HD, can it be cloned and replaced with an SSD drive?
  4. when i store new NAV places as favorites, the car saves them. when i come back to the car, there are no favorites listed.
IS this an issue or are favorites only saved for the time the car is on?

1. I asked the same question a while back. Never got an answer.

2. About 18 GB is the amount of space available for your media. Not sure what the total size is.

I think it was around 20 GB total in my 2013 which had the post-refresh updated MMI.

  1. It uses an automotive grade HDD that can withstand the extreme temperatures that can occur in a car as well as the shocks etc.

  2. I don't know what the total size is, but if I remember correctly there is about 20 GB left for your data.
  3. It theoretically can be cloned and replaced with an SSD, but you don't want to do that with a consumer grade SSD if you plan to leave your car out in the heat. Consumer electronics are not designed to survive the extreme temperatures that can be found inside a car. Automotive grade SSDs are not cheap.
  4. The MMI has multiple directories. There's a public directory and there are several private directories. The private directories are associated with your paired phone. Contacts, Favorites etc. stored in the private directories are only visible if the corresponding phone is connected. By default favorites are stored in your current private directory. If you want them to be public, you have to explicitly mark them public.

AHHA thank you super swiss. without the phone, no favorites. bring the phone in they then appear,
when saving favorites there is no "pubic" setting, just business and private. i set them as business ( i don't know what that means, but was hoping they would be stored for any car users)

You have to go to the corresponding contact in the directory, then edit contact and you should see a checkbox to make it public. BTW, this is all explained in the MMI owners manual. Private is the contact's home address/phone, Business is their work address/phone. The point of all this is that if you have multiple drivers they can all have their own contacts/favorites and if somebody steals your car, they can't see your home address without your phone if you have it stored in the MMI.

That's what voice control is for. Combined with syncing contacts from one's phone, the ability to send destinations from the phone via MMI connect app and Google Maps on a desktop directly to the car and the ability to do Google Local Voice searches from the car, I don't find myself inputting text directly into the MMI very much.
