Where I live must be an anomaly then. I am seeing diesel prices at my local station at $3.99 whereas the price if premium is at $4.27/gallon. I've noticed that when we switched over from the winter to summer blend, premium prices have been consistently higher than diesel.

I'm not sure how to break out SQ5 listings on Fuelly, and I suspect that the Q5 gas V6 is tainted. But not by much.
We just sold my wife's Camry hybrid. I calculated that we'd paid of the premium over the base 4 cylinder after 4.5 years and after 3 years over the higher end SE.
I wish Audi would bring the SQ5 BiTDI over to the states. THAT would be a fun car! And I've stated so on every Audi survey I've participated in.

For me diesel is routinely 60 to 80 cents cheaper than premium . Right now diesel is 3.62, and premium is 4.37. So I'm saving MPG and fuel expense compared to my previous SUV.
While all TDI owners look for different things in ownership, for me, it's the combination of performance, mileage, fuel expense, and room/features of the Q5 TDI.
I never looked at the TDI price premium being offset by a fuel mileage savings alone.

Don't forget about resale. In a reasonable # of years, you'll still be able to sell the TDI for the offset price you originally paid. So, the fuel savings effectively start at mile #1.

While awaiting my TDI, I compared 93oct and diesel pricing at various stations around me, including the various credit card / member discounts I would get from each. Here's the result:
At the time, I was comparing my future Q5 to current A3 2.0T and based on the 24ish mpg I was getting on the A3 on 93 oct, I calculated what the Q5 TDI needed to get at the corresponding diesel price at my preferred gas station as well as best price of any station I was following and determined what MPG my TDI needed to get to cost the same. Roughly it was between 24-25, and I've been getting better than that:
Using those same fuel prices, I compared various MPG comparisons to see how much each combo would save. If I compare TDI at nearly 28mpg vs 3.2/3.0T at around 19mpg (per fuelly), it's probably roughly equivalent to my 30vs21 (since I don't have a 28vs19), thus looking at the solid dark green line 3rd from the top, it looks like about $5000 savings in fuel over 100k miles. As mentioned below, I anticipate that savings to be fully in my pocket as I expect to sell the TDI for the same offset (~$2k) over the 3.0T as I paid when I bought it.

Fuel pricing over time:
I'm "only" getting 26 MPG average (over winter since September) on my TDI, but I enjoy driving it and the best way to compare my results are to compare to my other cars that I've driven similar ways. As you can see, I'm notably exceeding the MPG I got on the smaller car, smaller engine, 2wd, A3. The TDI is also faster to 60 than the A3 was. It's been a great upgrade all around for me in these regards:
