This is an option and how most old school shops do it. Just go slow and use a little heat.
I think there used to be a write up on doing it that way. Personally, I used the tool that mounts to the hub. It worked well and I felt more confident but the bat will work.

I never used a heat gun, but that is GOOD advice.
I'm just hard headed. I did all my cars in the dead of summer though, 90+ degrees and sunny. I guess this allows for the no heat gun method. ;>P
