Yeah they do. If you read any interviews from drivers that spanned both eras (Mansell, Prost,
Senna, etc) they hated the paddles and preferred everyone had sequential sticks. Much more room for driver error and the more skilled had an advantage.

I drove with one about 3-4 weeks ago going through Tempe, AZ
...too bad I was in my gf's 90hp TDI at the time! Looked good in silver, but it was some 50ish year old guy driving wearing a flannel shirt. He looked really out of place.
