Default iPod "not supported"

My wife just picked up her new TT convertible yesterday. We're trying to get everything setup. She has an iPod she uses specfically for her car. When we connect it to the USB port it says "loading" for a bit then says "not supported". The manual specifically says it supports iPods so I can't figure out why it doesn't work. The manual mentions they sell a cable for it, do you have to have their special cable for it to work?

Haven't tried an iPod, but a standard Apple cable works with both an iPhone 4s and 6s.

There's another ongoing thread about a problem one owner has with one of the USB ports:

What model of iPod do are you trying to use? It's possible the new MMI does not support older iPods but should support an iPod Touch and any iPhone.

That seems to be it. She had an older click wheel type. We tried a touch and it did work. Hmm... wonder why it can't use the older ones? My BMW can une my old Nano just fine.

I have a 'classic' 2006 iPod and it is a bit problematic. I have to manually go back to playlist in the MMI each time i want to use it (doesn't "carry over" settings between drives like other media). But it does work. Standard USB.

btw: Mine is an 80GB Classic. The firmware was/is up to date but under Windows so I restored under Macintosh. We shall see, but if I still just have to open Playlists in the MMI not so bad.
My iPhone 6s (BT connected) and twin SD cards work fine, as does the DVD/CD player, as well as Sirius and of course HD Radio. I've never bothered with the hard drive Jukebox allocation. How many sources do we need?

The Jukebox adds another 20GB of music file capacity with the added functions of global random play (vs album only with the SD cards) and the album cover flow feature.

It's actually about 10GB on the MIB2 systems. And cover flow is on all sources as it pulls from Gracenote.

Not talking about cover art, I'm referring the the Jukebox album sorter/cover flow or what ever they call it. On my 2013 A6 I have about 20GB available for music files or half of the total hard drive capacity..
