Audi A3: How to Install Paddle Shifters

If you didn't spring the extra cash for paddle shifters in your A3 and are now regretting it, rest assured because retrofitting them is possible, and surprisingly relatively cheap.

This article applies to the Audi A3 (2004-2012).

Paddle shifters weren't really a "thing" in the world of automotive performance until a few years ago, but their popularity in modern sports cars has spread like wildfire, and for good reason. Paddles allow the driver to shift up and down much more easily and intuitively than the old "manual mode" on a floor shifter, and you don't even have to take you hands off the wheel to do so. But if you aren't lucky enough to have an A3 equipped with the paddle shifters from the factory, you might be thinking that all is lost. The good news is, you can retrofit a paddle shifter equipped steering wheel to your car for a relatively low cost. Here's how it's done.

Materials Needed

  • Complete steering wheel with paddle shifters (available on eBay and other sites)
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Small flat head screwdriver
  • 12mm star bolt

Step 1 – Remove the air bag

Before beginning, pop the hood and disconnect the battery, then allow it to sit for at least 30 minutes to ensure there is no power to the airbag. Use a screwdriver to release the two clips located behind the steering wheel by depressing the metal tabs. Once both are released, the air bag will pop right out. Remove the air bag connector by removing the white tab from the yellow connector, then release the yellow connector. Next, use a small flat head screwdriver to disconnect the steering wheel button connector. Remove the air bag and set it aside.

Step 2 – Replace steering wheel

Use a 12mm star bolt to remove the steering wheel bolt and pull the steering wheel straight back to remove it. Install the new wheel, lining it up exactly in the position of the old wheel. Reinstall and tighten the steering wheel bolt. Reconnect the airbag connectors and push it back into the retaining clips. Reconnect the battery. Though no reprogramming is necessary for the new wheel, you may get some warning lights when you first start the car up after installation. The computer will relearn the new wheel on its own and will function properly after a few minutes.
