Audi A4 B7: How to Fix One Touch Window Up/Down

Power window switches are nice when they automatically wind windows up or down.

By Piyush Kayastha - April 8, 2016

This article applies to the Audi A4 B7 (2004-2008).

Car manufacturers made a real breakthrough when they were able to create a system that electronically (automatically) allowed operations of the windows in up or down motions. That technology moved even further when car manufacturers were able to implement "one touch" windows. This enabled the user to press the driver's window switch and let go. The result was a smooth transition of the glass in an up or down direction (depending on the window's current disposition). The actions are commonly called "auto-up" and "auto-down." While it's really just a convenience feature, it is nice to have. Should these features stop working on your Audi A4, read on about how to fix this issue.

Materials Needed

  • VAG-COM
  • Flat tip screwdriver
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Torx 25 driver
  • Test light or multimeter
  • Pliers

Step 1 – Read the codes

Often, the vehicle's on-board computer or ECU will store trouble codes that could give you a good starting point in diagnosis of the problem.

  • Locate the OBD port.
  • Remove the cover.
  • Connect the VAG-COM cable.
  • Start the reader and record any codes found.

Pro Tip

The OBD-II port is located under the steering wheel near the hood release lever.

Step 2 – Check fuses

Fuses have a lot to do with continuity of electrical connections.

  • Locate the fuse box.
  • Determine the fuse location for power window switches.
  • Remove the fuse using pliers and observe for any broken filaments.

Pro Tip

Fuses are located under the dashboard. To access them you need to open driver's door, locate dashboard side cover and pry it.

Step 3 – Reset window switches

If you have recently had to replace your battery, the factory settings for the window switches might have been reset.

  • Push down on driver's side window button and hold for 10 seconds.
  • Pull up on the same switch two times and again hold for 10 seconds.

Pro Tip

You may have to try this procedure a couple of times for the system to learn the one touch function again. The car should be running when performing this reset.

Step 4 – Remove door card(s)

It may be possible that your window switch itself is faulty. This process will require removal of the door card.

  • Use a flat head screwdriver to remove the trim.
  • Take out the four Phillips screws.
  • Pry the plastic cover from the grab handle recess using flat head screwdriver.
  • Remove two more Phillips screws.
  • Remove the long Phillips screw from the bottom of the door card.
  • Pry the perimeter of the door card to release it from the clips.
  • Pry clip from the cable and remove the latch from the handle.
  • Disconnect the speaker/tweeter harness.
  • Disconnect the window motor harness by pulling it from the purple clip.
  • Lift the door card up and off.

Pro Tip

This is a good chance to see if any wires are pinched, burnt or broken.

Step 5 – Test window switch, motor and harness

Either the window motor or switch might not be functioning properly.

  • Turn the ignition to on position.
  • Use test light or probe at the window switch harness.
  • Have a friend use spare key to turn lock in either position (this will also instruct the ECU to bring the window down or up).
  • Also, check for any frayed wiring or damaged and pinched harnesses.

Pro Tip

Because you're only diagnosing the one touch functionality, at a maximum, it will probably be the window switch. A failed regulator would likely yield a "no window up or down whatsoever" situation.
