Top 5 Audi Cars of the 1990s

Audi dropped the TT on an unsuspecting public at the 1995 Frankfurt Auto Show. Many people dismissed it as a styling exercise to showcase Audi’s new “Bauhaus” styling. However, it debuted three years later and won the North American Car of the Year honors. Critics turned their noses at the idea of a sports car that shared a platform with the VW Golf. What they forget is the Golf is one of the best-handling front-wheel drive cars on the planet, and the platform also accommodates Audi’s Quattro all-wheel drive.

Even if the Audi TT shared a platform with a Yugo, it would be a thing of beauty. I’ve said before it’s the modern Porsche 356, and I stand by that. Like the 356, the TT borrows VW parts but is a masterpiece of design. Its form and simplicity are timeless.
