Default clanking engine noise and no power!!!

i own a 2001 a4. i was driving on the freeway and all of a sudden as i was coming up a turn, my car started to lose power, as i pushed the gas not much happened and my car started to shake. the yellow battery charge light then followed. i barely made it home, driving very slow and catiously. i popped the hood open and there was no smoke, but it smelled liked something had or was burning. this morning i turned on my car, no dashboard lights came on, but my engine now shakes violently and makes a loud clanking noise. havent tried driving yet. dont want to make things worse. please help!!!!

You have any work performed recently? - or in the last few thousand miles?

Never experienced something quite like that... but I guess it could be one of a few things. I would first and foremost start by running a diagnostic scan. Find somebody nearby with VAG-COM (regional forums) and read the fault codes. Surely it has some...

I'd hate to throw out possibilities right now, because there could be so many, though many very unlikely. Anyway, w/o more info, not sure how we can help.

Rule of Thumb: Check fault codes first, and often.
These cars record and remember even the slightest alteration that they are capable of, many to the dismay of the consumer.
