Need some timing belt help
In the process of changing out my timing belt for my 99.5 1.8L AEB engine and hit a snag. It's really cold up here in Jersey, and I know that my cam gear and crank gear have not moved, but I can't get the timing belt on lined up with the teeth. I am inbetween teeth--one being too loose and having too much play between the cam gear and the oil pump gear, and the other setting would be just right but I can't get the belt on. Has anyone had any experience with the timing belt shrinking in really cold weather enough to make it hard to line up the teeth??? I have the belt inside warming up right now.
Also, looking through my Bentley manual, I am trying to figure out the torque for the two bolts that attach the tensioner piston (the thing you pull the pin out of) to the block. The old diagram of the old tensioner set-up shows one bolt with 7ftlbs, am I right to assume both the bolts for the tensioner to the block are supposed to be 7ftlbs since they are the same size??
TIA

Re: Need some timing belt help
Make sure you have all the belt slack on the tensioner side. This is easier said than done, but it is a must. If it still seems to be half a tooth off on the top gear, carefully move the belt one tooth on the lower pulley. With a 2:1 ratio, one one tooth on the top pulley is 2 on the bottom, or 1 tooth on the bottom pulley is 1/2 tooth on the top.
